This is a wonderfully charming piece! An original primitive oil painting (possibly a student's study) after John Frederick Herring Sr.'s humorously titled "Three Members of the Temperance Society." John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865) was a prominent painter, sign maker, and coachman. His sporting art was widely recreated as engravings and has regularly featured on fine china from English potteries. So, it is not uncommon to see amateur studies of his more famous pieces.

The timeless scene depicts three horses drinking from an ivy covered stone water trough. The way the artist has painted the horses fills the piece with personality and charm.

Dimensions:

  • Overall: 14.5" tall by 18.5" wide

Condition:

This oil painting on board is in fair condition. There are scratches to the surface – particularly around the edges of the piece (most likely from an older frame). The painting has darkened with age. The frame is in good condition, with some white paint spots on the top edge, some areas of wear to the finish, small scratches, and dents throughout.

This is an antique item and therefore is naturally in "used" condition. Please view all photos before purchasing.
