This hand-colored engraving, printed in England in 1793, features a charming illustration of the Thoroughbred race horse "Anvil"* and is accompanied by the caption, "Anvil, late property of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Published Feb. 1st, 1793. by J. Wheble. Warwick Square."
Of hundreds of prints I browsed in a small high street print shop in the Peak District, this engraving caught my eye, first for it's age and the lovely, naive style of the artwork, and second for the soft hand painted colors in the landscape behind the horse.
Three other antique prints found in the same print shop during our trip to England last fall are part of this curated collection and can be found here:
- 1810 Framed Hand-Colored Hunt Scene Engraving "His Majesty going out with the hounds on Windsor Forest
- 1831 Framed Antique Hand-Colored Horse Engraving: "Moonraker"
- 1860 Miniature Framed Hand-Colored Hunt Scene Lithograph
*A bit of Thoroughbred trivia for you: "Anvil" was by "Herod," one of the three stallions recognized as the foundation sires of the modern Thoroughbred.
Dimensions:
- Artwork: 6" wide by 4.5" tall
- Frame Overall: 12.5" wide by 9.5" tall
Condition:
Engraving is in excellent condition with very slight darkening of the paper in areas due to age.
The engraving has been carefully framed in a lovely repurposed antique frame. The frame has some chips and scratches to the finish in areas. Each framing element is archival: from the museum grade mat and backing board, to the traditional mulberry paper mounting hinges, to the dust cover on the back of the frame.
This is an antique item and therefore is naturally in "used" condition. Please view all photos before purchasing.
